In a surprising development, Google has revealed plans to discontinue its dark web monitoring tool by February 2026. This decision comes less than two years after the feature was introduced, aiming to help users track whether their personal information has been compromised and is circulating on the dark web.
The company will halt scans for dark web breaches starting January 15, 2026, and the complete shutdown of the tool is set for February 16, 2026.
Google stated, "While the report offered general information, feedback indicated that it didn’t provide practical next steps for users." This acknowledgment highlights an important aspect of user experience: having access to information is only beneficial if users know how to act on it. As a result, the tech giant plans to refocus its efforts on developing tools that offer more straightforward, actionable guidance for protecting personal information online.
Additionally, Google will erase all data associated with the dark web report feature once it is officially retired in February. However, users who wish to remove their monitoring profiles before the shutdown can do so by following these steps:
* Visit the Dark Web report at this link
* Click on 'Edit monitoring profile' under "Results with your info"
* Finally, click "Delete monitoring profile" at the bottom and confirm deletion.
Launched in March 2023, the dark web report aimed to tackle the rising issue of online identity theft fueled by information obtained through data breaches and subsequently appearing on the dark web. The service was designed to scan hidden parts of the internet for sensitive personal details including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers, notifying users whenever their information was discovered.
In July 2024, Google broadened the accessibility of this feature, extending it beyond just Google One subscribers to all account holders, underscoring its commitment to user security.
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance account safety, Google is encouraging users to implement more robust privacy practices. This includes creating a passkey for multi-factor authentication (MFA) that is resistant to phishing attacks and utilizing the "Results about you" tool to manage and remove personal information from Google Search results.
