BBC are planning on doing a Spin off of Have I Got news for you focusing on Sport after they decided to axe Question of Sport https://www.tvzoneuk.com/post/haveigotsportforyou-developingann1

This feels like a rehash of They Think It's All Over, which was hilarious back in the day, but this one fills me with dread for some reason.

I will only watch this if they still have Ian as one of the team captains. Always entertaining seeing him try to talk about football.

I think this will be decent, and I'm interested to see how it goes. If it has the same vibe as HIGNFY, then I will enjoy it.

I think they saw the prolonged success of A League of Their Own and thought back to the success of They Think It's All Over. To mimic those two, they increasingly tweaked A Question of Sport to include more banter/games like the above two, but while still containing plenty of sports questions.

However this middle ground seemed to please no-one. The long term fans of AQoS didn't like what was a straight sports quiz being messed with. Those looking for more of a light entertainment programme felt it fell short of an actual comedy quiz. Thus, it lost viewers. Add on the Marmite Paddy McGuiness and it was doomed.

This new idea seems like they have decided to go full on down the ALOTO/TTIAO route. Time will tell if it works, but ITV tried it with Play to the Whistle, and it didn't really take at all.

Fair enough if that's their decision but surely there's room for a more serious sports quiz? Doesn't have be all jokey and banter does it?

Nope. Not at all. In fact A Question of Sport and They Think It's All Over both ran successfully alongside each other for several years.

Yes I recall. When TTIAL over was on I was in my 20’s. So it appealed to me more than QOS. Now I’m in my 50’s QOS was the more appealing (before they got PMcG in). Seems like the BBC are just alienating a % of their audience. Oh well. Their loss I guess.

Not sure about this, sounds more like a charity spin off then a new series.

I did think this was a Comic Relief special.

The original - a link to which I posted up thread - was a deliberate (pretty flimsy) mix of sport and politics done for comic relief. This will just be a sports quiz but presumably with the ethos of HIGNFY and employing the same production company.

It should be said that this has not been commissioned by the BBC, nor have they said anything about it officially. I doubt if it's anything more than a pilot at this stage, one which hasn't been yet been recorded, and will have a few more hurdles to overcome before it becomes a series. If it ever does see the light of day, I very much doubt that Have I Got Sport For You will be the title - it sounds like a working title at best.

Why not? They once tried applying the Question of Sport format* with an entertainment theme and called it, er, A Question of Entertainment:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vkwd3b-JDg
Only lasted one season - and I think you can see why!

    * Albeit somewhat loosely, although they did have two team captains with two guests each and a number of rounds, including a picture board round and "What Happened Next?"!

In the simplest terms, because it will then be seen as a spin-off from HIGNFY and not as a new show in its own right that has a life separate to its forbear. Although you've kind of answered your own question with your A Question of Entertainment example.

They also did another spin off in about 99 2000 called a question of pop which lasted about 2 series.

I will never forget the Feel the Sportsman featuring Giant Haystacks, one of the funniest things I've seen. "It's not Sharon Davies"!

I agree, this would be a good revival, so many more recent sports people that could be either on teams or guests. I'd like to see Andy Murray as a captain, he's much more humorous than people realize.

That was on the very first show, along with Willie Carson (for contrast). "He's chewing a squirrel." See it again on my YouTube channel:
