Two Brampton men face a total of 38 charges related to an alleged fake taxi scam in Peel Region, police say.
In a news release issued Thursday, Peel Regional Police described incidents spanning 2024 and 2025, most of which occurred in shopping mall parking lots.
According to investigators, a suspect posing as a taxi passenger would approach people in need of help, claiming he could not pay the fare because the driver would only accept debit cards. When victims complied and handed over their debit cards, a second man, pretending to be the taxi driver, would covertly swap the victims’ cards for a stolen card from the same bank.
Police said the suspect then used a point-of-sale device connected to a laptop to capture the victims’ PIN numbers. Shortly afterward, the two suspects allegedly visited bank machines to withdraw funds from the victims’ accounts and carry out additional fraud. Authorities believe stolen vehicles were used during the alleged scheme.
One suspect, 22-year-old Manvir Singh, was arrested on October 9. He faces charges including attempt to commit fraud, eight counts of fraud under $5,000, five counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and five counts of using stolen credit cards.
The other suspect, 25-year-old Syed Hunain, was arrested on November 18. He faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, using a disguise with the intent to use a stolen credit card, nine counts of fraud under $5,000, and four counts each of possession of property obtained by crime and using stolen credit cards.
