Unveiling the Enigmatic Gwen John: A Tale of Artistic Rebellion and Solitary Pursuits
In a museum, a painting of Tenby, Gwen John's hometown, hangs as her sole known work from that period. It's a glimpse into her early life, a time when she was a student in London, capturing the beach at twilight with a hint of melancholy. Judith Mackrell, John's biographer, notes the absence of fathers in the painting, a reflection, perhaps, of her own father's emotional distance. The idealized young mothers, with their sweet attentiveness, seem to echo John's last happy memories of her mother.
For Nicky Wire, bassist of the Manic Street Preachers and a longtime fan, this painting was his first encounter with John's work. He describes it as an outlier, contrasting with her later artistic style. Wire even wrote a song inspired by the complex dynamic between John and her brother Augustus, titled "The Secret He Had Missed." Their artistic visions differed greatly; while Augustus sought to conquer the world, John preferred to retreat into her own world.
The death of their mother and the resulting misery may have been the catalyst for both John and Augustus to leave home, according to Mackrell. John's vision of a world beyond the darkness of her childhood became a driving force in her career. When Augustus attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London, the only UK art school accepting female students at the time, John's persistence led to her enrollment the following year. A self-portrait from this period, now in the Tate Britain, impressed her tutor Frederick Brown so much that he purchased it.
Thomas Kennedy, a Tate curator, explains that the painting was recognized as a masterpiece even in John's early career. After three years, John went to Paris to study under James McNeill Whistler for six months before returning to England. In 1903, she and her friend Dorelia McNeill, also Augustus's mistress, set off for Rome via Bordeaux, but only made it as far as Toulouse before changing course for Paris, which became John's home until shortly before her death.
Kennedy suggests that the desire for recognition on her own terms may have influenced John's decision to leave Britain for France. Augustus, a talented artist in his own right, overshadowed his sister, and France offered John the opportunity to flourish independently. Outside of her romantic life, John's career flourished. By 1911, she had gained an American patron, John Quinn, whose financial support until his death in 1924 allowed her to move to the Parisian suburb of Meudon and dedicate herself entirely to her art, which was increasingly influenced by her growing faith.
As Wood notes, John saw her art and religion as two sides of the same coin. She referred to herself as "God's little artist, a seer of strange beauties, a teller of harmonies, a diligent worker." Much of her work, as the exhibition showcases, focuses on three-quarter portraits of women, often seated and sometimes reading. John refined her craft through meticulous repetition, creating multiple pictures of the same or similar subjects on her modest-sized canvases.
John's solo exhibition during her lifetime was a rare occurrence, taking place in 1926. She left Paris just before World War II, but her journey back to Britain ended in Dieppe, where she passed away.
