Veronica Ewers Retires: Prioritizing Health Over Elite Cycling Career (2025)

A bold reality check: elite cycling demands more than talent—it demands full, sustainable health. Veronica Ewers is stepping back from professional competition ahead of the 2026 season, a mutual choice with EF Education–Oatly that centers on her long-term well-being and recovery from RED-S.

Veronica has lived with RED-S throughout her racing career. She took a extended break in 2024 to support healing, then returned to competition under the careful oversight of EF’s medical and nutrition teams. Together, they tailored her training and race calendar while vigilantly tracking symptoms to aid her recovery.

She has shown unwavering commitment to rebuilding her health and has worked tirelessly to support her recovery while remaining a solid teammate, both on and off the bike.

Before the 2026 pre-season camp, bloodwork conducted by her personal nutritionist revealed hormonal indicators still aligned with RED-S. In light of this, Veronica and the team agreed that it was best for her to step away from her contract. This move allows her to devote time to recovery without the pressures that come with a professional athlete’s schedule and obligations.

EF’s medical staff, therapists, and dietitians will remain available to Veronica during her time away from competition.

“The team has supported my recovery, but the time required for my body to heal fully hasn’t arrived yet,” Veronica stated. “Now is the moment to prioritize my health, because without a complete recovery, true performance remains out of reach. If I ever aim to compete at the highest level again, I must first restore full bodily function.”

She added gratitude for the team’s listening ear and backing as she pursues health first.

Esra Tromp, EF Education–Oatly’s general manager, emphasized that rider health and long-term well-being guide every major decision. “Veronica has shown remarkable courage and dedication, and our support will persist as she focuses on her health. We hope to see her return to health and strength in the future.”

Our best wishes go with Veronica as she undertakes this recovery journey.
